Casillero del Diablo Carmenere

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Name: Casillero del Diablo

Variety: Carmenere (13.5% Alcohol)
Region: Rapel Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2012
Price: $10

My Review: This is a dark, ruby red wine that has thick legs.  This wine honestly has, by far, the worst aroma of any wine that I have ever smelled.  It smells slightly like raspberries, but the overwhelming smell I get from this wine is garbage; specifically rotting meat and moldy fruit.  The smell actually makes me scared of tasting this wine.  This wine tastes much better than it smells, it is smooth and has the perfect amount of tannins.  The moldy, rotten aroma that I smelled is not in the taste at all, it has a very earthy flavor.  The one thing I do not like about this wine is that there is a slight rubbery texture.

Winery Review: This variety disappeared from its place of origin - Médoc, north of Bordeaux- after the attack of the Phylloxera pest, appearing again in Chile at the end of the 20th Century. Casillero del Diablo developed all its mildness and finesse. Colorful, with soft and round tannins, together with attractive redcurrant and chocolate bouquets, it is ideal for matching with aged cheese.

I did not drink this with food
I would drink this again (8/10)
